Sculpture: Modern Bas-relief of a Seated St. James With Scalllop Shell Below Carved in Granite, Hospital del Orbigo, 2011.
Less common by far than depictions of Santiago as a standing pilgrim or mounted on a charger as Santiago Matamoros, the seated St. James shown here is derived from the mullion at the center of the tympanum of Master Mateo’s marvelous 13th century Pórtico da Gloria in the Cathedral at Santiago de Compostela. This fine little sculpture decorates an albergue in Hospital de Orbigo.
